International Workshop Week

During the International Workshop Week at HGK Basel in March 2024, we led an intensive workshop focused on advanced workflows for image and video creation using machine learning tools.

Over the course of the week, students were introduced to a structured methodology for working with multiple ML platforms, beginning with custom pipelines for image generation, refinement, and upscaling, and progressively expanding into the integration of these processes within video production.

The future of visual practice lies in how we choose to shape these tools.

Over the course of the week, students were guided through a structured progression of tools and methodologies. The workshop began with personalized workflows for image generation, refinement, and upscaling, emphasizing prompt design, dataset logic, and aesthetic control.

From there, participants expanded their practice into motion, exploring how ML-generated imagery can be translated into video through a combination of animation techniques, temporal consistency tools, and post-production pipelines.

Technology becomes meaningful only when guided by critical and creative intent.

A key focus of the workshop was demystifying machine learning systems and encouraging students to question their limitations, biases, and implications. Rather than treating AI as an automated solution, we emphasized authorship, decision-making, and intentionality, fostering a critical mindset toward the images and narratives produced by these tools. Discussions around ethics, originality, and visual homogenization were integrated alongside technical instruction.

Our objective was to provide students with a solid framework to critically and creatively integrate these technologies into their own work.

Ultimately, the workshop positioned machine learning as part of an evolving visual language — one that designers and artists must learn to shape responsibly. For us, teaching at HGK Basel was not only about sharing technical knowledge, but about contributing to an open conversation on how emerging technologies can expand creative practice while remaining grounded in critical thinking and human authorship.
